Tigaïa is an ideal starting point to discover all the resources of the Montagne Noire which offers full of activities. Hiking : from the house, you can hike up to the lake of Saint-Denis and on to the Lake of Bès (pleasant family walk). Varied landscapes with panoramic views of the Pyrenees, garrigue, forest, rushing stream with bathing basins … Another beautiful but more challenging walk, starts here and descends to the south to reach the village of Montolieu 6 km below. This stunning walk crosses beautiful Mediterranean gorges.
The sources of the Canal du Midi within 6 km “La ¨Prise d’Alzeau”, offers a beautiful setting where the waters of the lakes of the Montagne Noire are sent to the Canal du Midi. Beautiful forests, streams, torrents, on a bike-friendly track that winds along a small canal in the mountains, under the big trees. There is bar and restaurant in the forest. Next door, in the village of Fontiers Cabardés, a musical and warm place the “Club 620”. Bike rental in Saint-Denis.
Along the river Dure, between green oaks and granite, is “Le Moulin à papier de Brousses” (water-powered paper mill). Its working factory produces artists’ paper and Japanese paper using old methods. There are calligraphy displays and workshops for children and a cool, shady picnic spot by the river. 3 km
The village of Saissac, 5 km on a beautiful road and Saissac is revealed. This old village with its streets going down to the Cathar castle dominates the valley of the Aude and offers a superb panorama on the Pyrenees. Just up the hill is the lovely Lac du Lampy with beaches, forests, supervised bathing, canoeing, and an arboretum. In the village, bakery, shops with local products, and “Le Trésor d’Oc” held by Patricia, serves gourmet meals and snacks and sells a selection of hand-picked local wines. Several medieval and music events in summer such as the festival “Guitares à Travers Champs” (Guitars through the fields) in different villages like in Saint-Denis. Montolieu, 6 km away, is the village of arts and books. It boasts 15 bookshops, galleries, artists’ workshops, a book museum, and the contemporary art museum “Fondation Ceres Franco”. Five restaurants, an excellent celar, “La Cave des Oliviers” held by Adrian, and an organic vegetables dispenser 24/24. Nearby, beautiful walks and swimming around the Devil’s Bridge as well as in the gorges. Also nearby are a cactus nursery and the medieval garden at the Abbey of Villelongue. In Montolieu, you can hire a 2CV for quirky outings.
Lastours and its 4 Cathar castles “the citadels of vertigo” about 10 km, are located in an exceptional setting which should not be missed. The roads that lead to it pass stunning scenery and the village of Lastours itself has an excellent gourmet restaurant. The pretty Mediterranean village of Aragon, set in the middle of vineyards, also has an excellent restaurant.
The spectacular Cabrespine chasm and Limousis cave, not far from Lastours, towards the Minervois, make a great family trip, or for the more adventurous, a caving safari. In the same area, there is the village of Roquefère with its castle, its jazz festival and the impressive 90-meter waterfall of Cubserviès.
In the valley, Le Canal du Midi, has a nautical base at Bram (20mn) where you can hire boats without a license. There is also a good “guinguette” restaurant by the side of the canal.
Carcassonne and its UNESCO-listed medieval city, which attracts thousands from all over France for its 14th July fireworks. Its open-air theatre comes into its own during the Carcassonne summer festival, with classical concerts, opera, dance, theater and the biggest national and international music stars. Close to the city, Lac de la Cavayère offers a superb tree-top walk and an 18-hole golf course.
Rennes le Château, Rennes les Bains and the Pech de Bugarach. Those must-sees places are about an hour by car. Rennes les Bains is a spa town whose hot springs can be enjoyed free of charge by river-bathers, or you can pay to use the thermal baths and spa. Rennes le Château, shrouded in myths and mysteries, and its wild and grandiose landscapes, are on the way to the famous Pech de Bugarach, which Mayan prophecy named as the only place to escape the end of the world in 2012.
